I remember when I was on my way to Miriam’s house. I had her book in one hand, and my camera in the other. There were questions running through my head: How will she be like? Is she as friendly as she seems on TV? After all, Miriam was an actress, TV host and of course, made the Philippines proud by bringing home the First Runner- up title of Miss Universe in 1999. "He Can Catch You When You Fall" talks about being given a second chance in life. “The greatest blessing is really the knowledge of God. His love for me, His great love for everyone,” she shares.
Miriam is married to Ardy Roberto, a well-known Christian author in the Philippines. As I rang the bell to their beautiful Greek-inspired home, their son Joshua (Ardy's son in his first marriage) welcomed me with a huge smile. I informed him that I’d be taking photos of him, mom and dad as they went about their usual day at home. He eagerly grabbed my camera and took some photos of his mom and his surroundings. I loved seeing how carefree he was. Ardy joined us an hour later.
Here’s what happened that day as they shared their afternoon with me.
Mommy and Joshua making one of his favorite dishes: Pizza! They made their own version of a Four-Cheese pizza and it was yummy!
I have learned that life doesn’t have to be perfect to be wonderful. The wheel of life doesn’t stay up all the time so we have to learn to rise every time we fall. Miriam’s life story is the perfect example of this. “Everything I have right now, it would not be possible if not for God,” she states. She is definitely one of the simplest, down-to-earth celebrities I’ve had the privilege of knowing.
The other day, I stumbled upon this quote by Junethea Crystal Centeno that seems very appropriate for Miriam's story: “Sometimes, struggles are exactly what we need in life. If God allows us to go through life without obstacles, we would not be as strong as what we have become.”
I couldn’t agree more.
